BackgroundResearch has consistently shown that interprofessional education (IPE) improves patient-centered care and outcomes. Specifically, newer research has identified that student leadership in IPE leads to improved participation among peers, thus leading to improved IPE overall. Peer teaching described within medicine and nursing has had positive effects for both the learner and the teacher, but these studies were uni-professionally and did not examine this within an…
Diabetes has a significant impact on the modern world. Among 37 million Americans with diabetes, 90-95% have type II diabetes. Risk factors for developing diabetes include family history, obesity, lack of exercise, and unhealthy diet. Complications of type II diabetes include diabetic neuropathy, vision/hearing loss, cardiovascular disease, and mental health issues. Eleven pre-licensure healthcare students representing dental hygiene, dentistry, medicine, nursing, physical therapy, and…
This was the second phase of an explanatory sequential mixed methods study. The study aim was to increase understanding of how to enact and sustain interprofessional collaborative practice between pediatric music therapists and their multidisciplinary co-workers. This study is the cross-case analysis of four case studies of music therapy programs in pediatric hospital settings. The four cases will be described to provide context for the cross-case analysis. Interview participants (n = 28)…
The four core competencies of interprofessional collaborative practice are values and ethics, role and responsibilities, communication, and teamwork. Interprofessional practice and education (IPE) experiences often center around these competencies, particularly in clinical settings. As students in the inaugural UW-Madison IPE Path of Distinction (PoD) cohort, we aim to conduct a project focused on curriculum development to expand IPE integration into clinical and community experiences. This…
Introduction Interprofessional collaboration amongst healthcare providers is crucial for successful health outcomes and patient satisfaction. It is essential that students in health professional programs learn the skills necessary to work in a team-based, patient-centered, interprofessional setting. Healthcare students at the University of Minnesota are provided with an opportunity to demonstrate and receive recognition for their efforts to learn and develop interprofessional…
BackgroundResearch has consistently shown that interprofessional education (IPE) improves patient-centered care, hence the way it is taught to students is pivotal. Previous studies evaluating an interprofessional teaching approach have proven to be effective in increasing interest in the topic. However, most of these studies involved only physicians and physical therapists. To our knowledge, no studies have examined other health professions teaching medical students. Therefore, a group…
We investigated the benefits of an interprofessional wellness visit for females aged 14-17 in affluent areas in Louisiana compared to a traditional wellness visit. This particular patient population is in overall good health with only 3.2% siting aliments. The major risk factors for this population include obesity, alcohol consumption, and cigarette smoking. The leading causes of mortality include unintentional injuries, homicide, and suicide. In order to determine which respective…
Black healthcare providers and health-related students are underrepresented compared to their overall population in the United States. Pipeline programs are essential for retention of Black students in the health professions. Black students at Predominantly White Institutions (PWI) generally face several challenges, namely a lack of institutional support, connections, and role models. Combined with systemic racism, these overlapping issues fail to encourage a sense of belonging at their…
Social workers are integral healthcare team members and are often overlooked for interprofessional education (IPE) with medical students. At the time of project development, the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) did not offer a medicine/social work (SW) IPE. An interdisciplinary team including 1 SW professor, 1 SW student, and 6 MCW students identified this as an area for curricular improvement. Our team conducted a needs assessment by interviewing various stakeholders (n=48). From…
Interprofessional education is an essential component of every health care professional’s training.1 Since 2016 when the Commission of Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) added interprofessional education to required elements in Physical Education, Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students have been training in this to contribute their own profession’s specialized knowledge as well as be a part of a team that ultimately improves patient outcomes.2 The Interprofessional…
