Patricia Xirau-Probert is a Clinical Assistant Professor, who serves as the University of Florida College of Dentistry’s Assistant Dean of Student Advocacy and Inclusion. Dr. Xirau-Probert has been engaged in professional and leadership development for 15 years, having implemented and directed programs involving students in counselor education, social work and psychology, as well as pre-health and dental education. Dr. Xirau-Probert is trained as an educator in Implicit Bias and Crucial Conversations. Her teaching experience includes an inter-professional education course for health professions, families and community involvement for teacher education majors and crisis intervention/suicide prevention for behavioral sciences professions.

Black healthcare providers and health-related students are underrepresented compared to their overall population in the United States. Pipeline programs are essential for retention of Black students in the health professions. Black students at Predominantly White Institutions (PWI) generally face several challenges, namely a lack of institutional support, connections, and role models. Combined with systemic racism, these overlapping issues fail to encourage a sense of belonging at their institutions.
