VINCIYA PANDIAN, PHD, MBA, MSN, RN CRNP, ACNP-BC, FAANP, FAAN, FFNMRCSI is Associate Professor and Assistant Dean for Immersive Learning and Digital Innovation. A member of the Global Tracheotomy Collaborative, Vinciya Pandian is internationally known for her clinical expertise in improving the care, safety, and quality of life of tracheostomy patients. Her primary scientific work, funded by the National Institute of Nursing Research (R01NR017433), focuses on identifying signs and symptoms of laryngeal injury post-extubation in the intensive care unit. Dr. Pandian is passionate about educating care providers on the best multidisciplinary approaches to improving outcomes of critically ill patients.

This multi-institutional project demonstrated how a structured approach to interprofessional collaboration and patient engagement can mitigate preventable harm and improve patient experience for patients with a surgical airway (tracheostomy). Care of such patients is high stakes and fraught with risk. Harm occurs in hospital settings and in the community because poor communication and fragmented care are pervasive.
