Teresa McCarthy, MD, MS, is geriatric faculty at the University of Minnesota. She served as the physician team lead for the interprofessional geriatric education program at Walker Methodist Health Center Transitional Care Unit. McCarthy’s research experience includes falls, urinary incontinence, osteoporosis, care transitions/rehospitalization, and interprofessional teams. She is the principal investigator for the Minnesota Geriatric Echo program, former MAGIC president, and sits on the American Board of Postacute and Longterm care Medicine.

The COVID-19 pandemic disproportionately impacted residents, families, and staff of nursing homes and senior care communities. Even with federally mandated emergency planning, the pandemic highlighted the lack of preparation to meet the daily challenges faced in senior care. In response, the federal CARES Act including funding for a nationwide network of nursing home cohorts led by academic health centers to disseminate clinical guidance in infection control and pandemic mitigation strategies.
