Quadira McPherson, BS, is a Program Assistant at Thomas Jefferson University in the Center for Interprofessional Practice & Education. She is a graduate of Cedar Crest College, with her degree in Public Helath , and works closely with faculty leads from different professions to execute and develop programming at JCIPE.

Background: Faculty development is a priority for our teamwork simulation programs. Student final evaluations of our programs previously included assessment of student knowledge and attitudinal change but not feedback about facilitator quality. We rapidly expanded our program from 148 students in March 2021 to 738 students in March 2022 with a concomitant increase in facilitators, many of whom were new. Evidence clearly shows many factors that have led to a higher mortality rate for black women during childbirth including provider dismissiveness of black womens’ health concerns and a higher risk for the use of unnecessary interventions. To support students’ understanding of these factors, the effect of other social determinants of health and the resulting impact on patient outcomes we developed a simulation case for interprofessional teams of students to address the needs of a black woman in her later stages of pregnancy. The events of spring and summer 2020 called attention to the racism and social injustices that still exist in our country, along with their impact on patient and population health and on interprofessional healthcare teams and team members.
