Leslie M. Smith is a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Michigan-Flint and a physical therapist with a Board Certification in Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Physical Therapy. For the past 8 years, she has been devoted to the implementation of interprofessional education at the University of Michigan-Flint. Dr. Smith completed the Interprofessional Leadership Program Fellowship at the University of Michigan in June 2017; attended the Train-the-Trainer Faculty Development Training at the University of Virginia in 2016; completed the Master Trainer TeamSTEPPS in 2017; and completed the VITAL training for interprofessional education in 2021.

Background: In the intensive care unit setting, lack of mobility can cause deconditioning and weakness, common problems for patients that require mechanical ventilation. Early mobility for patients in respiratory failure has been found to be safe and feasible. The Society of Critical Care Medicine’s 2018 “Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Management of Pain, Agitation, and Delirium in Adult Patients in the Intensive Care Unit” describes the importance of early mobility and exercise, however, there may be a gap between what is recommended and what is done in practice.
