Leonora Tisdale completed her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree in the Family Nurse Practitioner program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2022. She is passionate about Women’s+ Health and is drawn to work as a provider in that field. Her doctoral work, with dentists promoting HPV vaccination in the community health setting, illustrated the role Nurse Practitioners can play as interprofessional team leaders. Leonora has a BA from Guilford College; she earned her BSN at UNC-Chapel Hill. She worked as a critical care bedside nurse and now teaches undergraduate nursing students as a Clinical Instructor.

BACKGROUND Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the US and the oropharynx is the most common site of HPV-associated cancer. The FDA’s approval for the nonavalent HPV vaccine expanded in 2020 to include prevention of oral cancers. Oral health practitioners (OHPs) are uniquely situated to recommend HPV vaccination as a primary preventive measure for oropharyngeal cancer (OPC).
