Kelly Shakoor is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner, as well as a seasoned nursing educator. She is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan, where she has been teaching undergraduate nursing students since 2010. As part of her clinical practice, she works at the University of Michigan Student Run Free Clinic as a Family Nurse Practitioner. The UMSRFC is an IPE-focused clinic, where Dr. Shakoor works with Nurse Practitioner students, as well as students and faculty from the other U-M Health Science schools. She is passionate about chronic disease management in underserved populations.

Background: Patient presented to clinic with complaints of not feeling well mentally and physically, including lethargy, moodiness, polyuria, polydipsia, along with weight gain, extreme fatigue, and muscle aches. Initial in-office glucometer reading was greater than 600, A1C was greater than 14, and urine dipstick showed significant glucose. Decision was made to treat him in the clinic with close follow up, since he was very reluctant to go to the Emergency Room and was stable. The patient was able to understand instructions for his care, and he was amenable to this plan.Methods/Interventions…
