Joseph A. Zorek, PharmD, BCGP, FNAP, joined The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in July 2019 as Associate Professor in the School of Nursing and Director of the university-wide Quality Enhancement Plan—Linking Interprofessional Networks for Collaboration (LINC)—which was recognized nationally in July 2022 with the Award for Institutional Excellence and Innovation in Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Health Care by the Association of Schools Advancing Health Professions. Joe co-authored the 2019 national consensus guidance on quality IPE jointly developed by the Health Professions Accreditors Collaborative and National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education, and he is currently representing the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy on the workgroup assembled to update the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) core competencies framework. In partnership with IPEC and with support from the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation, Joe is also co-leading development and validation of the IPEC Institutional Assessment Instrument, a tool designed to measure institutional characteristics associated with high-quality IPE and inform institutional efforts for quality improvement. In 2021, Joe published “Interprofessional Practice in Pharmacy: Featuring Illustrated Case Studies” with McGraw-Hill Education, a textbook intended to highlight the myriad ways pharmacists leverage their expertise to advance the safe and effective use of medications as contributing members of interprofessional teams.

Organized by faculty and staff members of Linking Interprofessional Networks for Collaboration (LINC), UT Health San Antonio’s Quality Enhancement Plan to advance interprofessional education, interprofessional teams of first- and second-year professional and graduate students were invited to participate in the second annual LINC Interprofessional Case Competition during the spring 2022 semester. Background: Members of Linking Interprofessional Networks for Collaboration (LINC), UT Health San Antonio’s institutional initiative to advance interprofessional education (IPE), developed the university-wide LINC Common IPE Experience for all incoming learners. Launched in 2020, this foundational IPE activity involves three case-based online modules focused on teamwork and communication competencies completed synchronously in interprofessional groups of 3-4 students.
