Jamie M. Smith, PhD, RN, is an early career nurse-scientist passionate about addressing health disparities among aging adults. She obtained her PhD from the Rutgers University, School of Nursing. Her research interests are focused on how structural determinants and policy decisions influence the availability and effectiveness of care delivery. Dr. Smith seeks to inform practical interventions and support equitable social and health policies. Additionally, Dr. Smith is an Assistant Professor in the Jefferson College of Nursing and co-director of the Jefferson- Student Interprofessional Complex Care Collaborative in the Jefferson Center for Interprofessional Practice & Education at Thomas Jefferson University.

Individuals with complex medical and social needs are acutely vulnerable to the fragmented healthcare system. Social and economic factors, physical environments, and structural racism can further compound health and healthcare inequities. Prior experiences of bias due to race, nativity, gender, sexuality, socioeconomic status, health literacy, and disability may influence current interactions with systems and providers, leading to missed care, poor experiences, and adverse outcomes.
