Dr. E. Adel Herge is Professor and Director of the BSMS OT Program in the Department of Occupational Therapy at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA. As part of her work in the university Dr. Herge serves as faculty for the Jefferson Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education where she is the lead on Team Care Planning-an interprofessional simulation program focusing on development of teamwork skills in university students from various health care programs. Dr. Herge has presented at local, state and national venues on interprofessional education and simulation and has recently co-authored chapters in workbook on simulation which is currently in press.

Evidence clearly shows many factors that have led to a higher mortality rate for black women during childbirth including provider dismissiveness of black womens’ health concerns and a higher risk for the use of unnecessary interventions. To support students’ understanding of these factors, the effect of other social determinants of health and the resulting impact on patient outcomes we developed a simulation case for interprofessional teams of students to address the needs of a black woman in her later stages of pregnancy.
