Charles Windon, MD, is an assistant professor of neurology at the University of California San Francisco Memory and Aging Center. Dr. Windon seeks to further understand neurodegenerative disease among diverse populations, with an emphasis on understanding biomarker signature profiles of the cognitively impaired from diverse backgrounds. He also seeks to understand the impact of social determinants of health on cognition.

Background and significance:Many patients assessed by the Memory and Aging Center at UCSF Health are well insured with caregiver support and not from underrepresented racial and ethnic backgrounds. They do not represent the San Francisco Bay Area’s regional diversity seeking specialty referrals. With longevity and the chronic conditions of aging, the United States will have an estimated 14 million adults with some type of dementia by 2060, with women and minorities most impacted (The Truth About Aging and Dementia | CDC, 2019).
