Barbara O’Neill, PhD, RN is an Associate Clinical Professor and Urban Service Track/AHEC Scholar program liason for nursing at the University of Connecticut, as well as track coordinator in community health. She is an adjunct lecturer at Central Queensland University in Australia where she previously taught and conducted research. Her research interests include hospital avoidance, palliative care, simulation, diabetics experiencing homelessness, occupational risks in Emergency Medical Services, and violence against health care workers.

Healthcare profession curriculums provide limited opportunities for students to collaborate with each other across disciplines. If they learn about issues like underserved populations and social determinants of health (SDoH), which truly require team-based care, it is mainly from lectures and textbooks.
